The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) retained Stantec Consulting Ltd. to undertake the Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the reconstruction of the Highway 400 and Essa Road interchange, including the replacement of the Highway 400 overpass structures at Essa Road. The study area is within the City of Barrie.
The Preliminary Design of the project was documented in the Highway 400 Improvements from 1 km South of Highway 89 to the Junction of Highway 11 Transportation Environmental Study Report, 2004 (TESR) and TESR Addendum, 2017, to update the study (W.O. 06-20016). The TESR received Environmental Assessment (EA) clearance in 2006 and the TESR Addendum received EA clearance in 2017.
The Detail Design study has been completed and a Design and Construction Report (DCR) was made available for a 30 day public comment period from December 2, 2021 to January 4, 2022. The project construction phase commenced in June 2022 and construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2025.
